National War Museum

Il National War Museum si trova vicino a Forte Sant’Elmo ed è uno dei musei più popolari di Malta. L’edificio in origine ospitava una fabbrica di polvere da sparo, che venne trasformata in armeria nel 1853: qui infatti avvenivano esercitazioni antiaeree durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Focalizzato sul periodo della Prima e della Seconda Guerra Mondiale e sulla storia militare di Malta, il museo dal 2015 ospita anche materiale proveniente dall’età del bronzo fino al 2004, anno di ingresso di Malta nell’Unione Europea. Tra le esposizioni degne di nota è possibile ammirare l’unico biplano “sopravvissuto”alla guerra e la George Cross, conferita da Re Giorgio VI a Malta nel 1942 per il valore dimostrato, e inserita dal governo maltese nella propria bandiera. E’ inoltre possibile ammirare numerose fotografie e video che testimoniano le critiche condizioni di vita dei maltesi durante la guerra, con particolare riferimento ai bombardamenti e agli enormi danni subiti dalla popolazione: un’imperdibile lezione sulla storia dell’isola.
